'The Idol' Series Recap & 'Across the Spider-Verse' Review
Weekly Shmorgishborg - July 16th, 2023
Animation 'Across the Spider-Verse"

Animation usually evokes the specter of children’s programming. Some adults, my father being among them, consider animation low-brow or childish. Such associations with regard to animation are not unfounded, animated content typically caters to younger demographics. However, to write off animation entirely or to regard it as an inferior method of visual storytelling is, in my opinion, foolhardy.
One day we will discuss Bojack Horseman, quite possibly my favorite television show of all time, and I will more directly refute arguments that seek to degrade the art of animation.
This week, I went to see Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on the big screen. It was one of the best movies I’ve seen on the big screen in a long while. I want to return to the subject of animation at a later date, but I would be remiss if I didn’t pass along my rave review of Across the Spider-Verse.
Leaving the theater, I jotted down a flash review of the film:
Across the Spiderverse is a staggering demonstration of animation’s unique effective potential to tell cinematic stories in ways that feel novel, articulate, and singularly kinetic.
That’s all I’ll say for now, and I hope you get a chance to enjoy the ‘Spider-Verse’ on the big screen.

Farewell, film freaks. See you next week.
Any early thoughts on the upcoming Barbie/Oppenheimer blitz? Some compelling marketing on both fronts, I'd say, though they couldn't be more different films than if they were made on two different planets. Oh, we finally saw "Asteroid City"--I actually liked it, rather than hating it, as I did with "The French Dispatch." It's whimsical in the best way and is stuffed with fun little nods to all sorts of old films and movie history.
